SUMMARY:Omar ElSamadisy presents 'Microscopic vs. Macroscopic Freeway Efficiency Optimization using Reinforcement Learning'
DESCRIPTION:Freeways are currently suffering from increasing congestion that restricts socioeconomic activities and degrades the available infrastructure capacity\, especially when it is most needed -  during rush hours. This talk will present an overview of ongoing research on solving the congestion problem by optimizing the freeway efficiency both microscopically by developing a safe\, efficient\, and comfort car-following model for Autonomous Vehicles (AVs)\, and macroscopically by optimizing flow on freeways to prevent congestion and preserve safe and efficient flows at bottlenecks. The controllers are designed using the latest Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods and techniques. \nAbout the speaker\nOmar ElSamadisy\nOmar ElSamadisy is a fifth-year PhD candidate at the Civil & Mineral Engineering Department at U of T\, working under the supervision of Professor Baher Abdulhai. His main research goal is to develop microscopic as well as macroscopic control strategies to prevent congestion and preserve safe and efficient flows on freeways using AI methods. He holds a master's degree in Communications Engineering with a focus on channel access in wireless communications from the Arab Academy for Science\, Technology and Maritime Transport (Alexandria\, Egypt)\, the university where he also completed his bachelor’s degree in electronics and communications engineering. \n\nPresented by University of Toronto ITE Student Chapter\, UT-ITE. Free. All are welcome. \nIf any specific accommodations are needed\, please contact ite@studentorg.utoronto.ca. Requests should be made as early as possible.

SUMMARY:Jacqueline Darwood presents 'Improving safety and security in transit systems'
DESCRIPTION:The Transit Analytics Lab (TAL) invites you to a special talk by Jacqueline Darwood on February 28\, 2023\, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Zoom. \nSafety and security in transit systems needs to be considered throughout the life cycle of the system. This therefore means that these considerations should be included at the: \n\nPlanning phase\nDesign phase\nImplementation/testing\nOperations/monitoring\n\nTransit safety and security should be incorporated in all modes; however\, my presentation will focus on rail with examples from the TTC Line 1 and the Ottawa Line Extension project. The presentation will look at design elements such as requirements for adequate vertical circulation and platform capacity. Additionally\, I will also discuss the tools and technology currently available to simulate the operations based on design elements. I will also use the opportunity to examine the possible application of AI as a means of monitoring the system and the way forward to improving transit safety and security. \nAbout the speaker \n  \nJacqueline Darwood \nJacqueline Darwood is an experienced transit and mobility professional with over 25 years' experience in transit operations/planning\, infrastructure planning\, project management and policy development. Over the course of her career\, she has worked in both the public and private sectors across Canada. She has led and contributed to the planning and design of rapid transit and commuter lines in British Columbia and Ontario with major projects in Ottawa and the GTHA. Her work on several bus networks includes\, the TTC Express Bus Network\, the MiWay Transit Way\, and the redesign of the bus network in the Kingston Metropolitan Region in Jamaica. \nTo her friends and family\, she is known as the entertainer and personal shopper\, always ready to host a BBQ\, dinner\, or a movie night\, or simply get lost in the world of music. \nJoin us\nAll are welcome to attend this free webinar on Zoom.
