Please join us for the in-person seminar by Ruowei Li on Friday September 23rd from 11 AM to 12 PM at the ITS lab.

Last-mile delivery is labour-intensive, as it often requires foot couriers to reload multiple times and move bulky parcels in hand carts over long distances to finish the delivery. Person-following robots are a solution that is now beginning to be deployed to assist foot couriers in performing last-mile delivery tasks in public areas. Previously, these robots have mainly been used in controlled environments such as warehouses for order picking tasks, and the application of this technology in last-mile delivery has been limited. It is unclear whether these robots can perform effectively in dynamic pedestrian environments. This study provides a realistic simulation tool that integrates a person-following robot into pedestrian settings which can be used to evaluate the practicality of the deployment of commercial delivery robots in pedestrian environments.

Ruowei Li

Ruowei Li graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BASc degree in Civil Engineering in 2020. She then joined Professor Matthew Roorda’s research group at the University of Toronto as an MASc student. Her research interests include last-mile logistics, pedestrian simulation, and transportation planning. Ruowei’s current research involves developing a simulation model of a collaborative delivery robot in dynamic pedestrian environments.
